Yes, keyword research is important for blog posts, so that you can write about a topic people are searching for, but you should never stop writing about what ever I feel like, as that is what makes your blog unique.

Yes, Swine Flu is very topical at the moment and that is why the results were so quick, but the pint was that it is easy to rank highly for a keyword phrase that has little competition.

The trick is to find a keyword phrase that enough people actuality &lt;em&gt;using&lt;/em&gt; when searching, that has little competition :-)
