I also think what you say about Static websites not linking well in Search Engines are true. I can’t think how they can optimize their content that way. Google will only see the site as dead content. No news and nothing to see there.

I read everything Matt Cutts publishes, as he’s a one of the best on getting into Google the right way.

As I wrote, “For small business owners, in my opinion, a Static website on it’s own, is a waste of money,” so your suggestion of having a a static front end and a CMS is right on the money.

Running a static web site with a Wordpress blog on the same domain is my choice.

Following Google’s rules and giving Google what it wants … is the best way to get a good ranking.

As I mentioned, most directories are a waste of money (we won’t go into backlink value), but there are some good ones.
I check my Analytics and let them decide for me.

Interesting post. Matt Cutts in a recent post on his blog says that it is probably good practice to have a static page fronting your site AND a blog/CMS as a page link on it.

I take his advice with more than a pinch of salt. I think what you could do is have a static front end and have your CMS feed onto the page as links.

And I HATE those directory services pointless in the extreme.
