Will Facebook be a social network, a business network or No Network?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

At the moment, Facebook is being use as a Social Network and a Business Network, but with a growing list of annoying notifications, how long will it last as either of them?

If you want to use Facebook as a Social Network or a Business Network, how much of the “someone you don’t know” has asked you to add the “bug the crap out of me” application, can we take?

Or someone you don’t know” has added you as a friend …. you click the notification and there is nothing there to indicate how you know this person and why you should add them.

I think the Facebook is at risk of loosing more active members from these two annoyances, than they will be from adding more advertising.

Facebook, we all know where the applications are, and if I want to add one I will.

I also think that people that ask to be added as friends should have to fill out some details about who they are and how I’m connected to them, before they add me as a friend.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like Facebook, it’s by far the best out there at the moment, but I simply don’t want to waste time in there having to click ignore in my notifications.

Top U.S. Social-Networking Sites for December 2007

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Some interesting stats for December 2007 from Nielsen Online.

  • MySpace is at number 1, but growth is slowing, up 9%,
  • At number 2 is Facebook, growth is up 72%
  • Number 3 is Classmates Online, growth down 6%.
  • Fourth place is Windows Live Spaces, growth up 2%
  • In fifth place is AOL Hometown, growth down 24%
  • The rise of Club Penguin is interesting, it’s at number 6, growth up 137%, this is a Social Network for kids.
  • LinkedIn is at seventh place, with growth up 132%,
  • In eight place is Reunion.com, growth down 5%
  • Aol Community is in eight place, growth down22%
  • and in tenth place, Flixster’s growth is up 316%,

I see these growth spurts continuing until people start to join niche Social Networks.

Nokia developing a Facebook social networking tool? - (Rumor)

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Another interesting find, Nokia hints at Facebook deal, from www.vnunet.com, anyone want a mobile version of Facebook?

The article says that there are “rumours that Nokia is developing a social networking tool for its handsets.

While I personally still can’t see a need to have this option, for any social network, other than maybe posting status updates, I do see it as a big step forward.
